Selby Abbey

Selby Abbey

Selby Abbey is a 950 year old grade 1 listed working parish church at the heart of Selby's community. Its history is one of destruction and rebirth surviving tower collapses, dissolution, the civil war, fires and the COVID-19 pandemic. The Abbey has nearly 1000 years of incredible stories, starting life as a Benedictine monastery, being Henry 1st's birth place, and being the reason Selby exists. It also holds a collection of books, photographs and documentary sources. Over the last couple of years, the Abbey has developed its heritage programme offering regular tours, activities and trails for families, as well as engaging more widely in the community with local groups, schools and colleges. The Abbey prides itself on being welcoming place for everyone in the local community and beyond.
